Wow. I hadn’t read any reports with that level of detail about how the ultimate capitulation went down. Completely chilling. I hope the judge rips into Bove and declines to drop the charges.

Not just Bondi, but Bove, should be disbarred. How soon could the Supreme Court get in on this disturbing, disgusting, and disgraceful turn of events? Of course, they themselves have some serious credibility issues.

I expect this in America until we take a stand. We will. The world is dumbfounded by our dummies going abroad. At least our leaders are not yet shooting our citizens, but they will crack skulls and shoot us. We need to be ready for that fork in the road.

It is only a matter of time before Trump invokes the Insurrection Act. Then we will have the National Guard roaming the streets in every major American city presumably to round up immigrants. I haven't forgotten how many times Trump talked about Democrats as "the enemy within."

We see it coming. I see the crowd rushing the White House, and Trump trying to escape through the safety exit. I do not see troops firing on this crowd.

Ever heard of Kent State or Jackson State? Four killed on May 4, 1970, in student protests at Kent State by National Guardsmen called when OH governor Rhodes did not like students protesting Viet Nam War on campus. (Protests began in response to Nixon announcing he would invade Cambodia.). And I do not expect Trump to try to escape. He will--as he did at the January 6 insurrection--stand and watch the carnage.

Unfortunately, Trump’s voters don’t care. They may even cheer this. And then you have the 90million plus who couldn’t bother to vote in November’s election. I just don’t know what it takes to lift the veil from the eyes of Trump supporters or to end the apathy of the largest portion of eligible voters.

Expand full comment

But without being a conspiracy theorist, it was fishy. It's now emerged that in one state alone I think it's 48,000 are still not counted in the votes and a MAGA cohort is trying to get them disenfranchised.

One huge. Area is women yes women that voted not having their votes stand while Trump's crew have said that if they don't have ID they like they are out, nada, zero vote.

This is because they say if their current ID fails to match their birth certificate their vote is out!

How many women have kept their birth name?? Very few.

Unless someone gets on top of this scandal it won't matter how many people voted Virtually ALL women votes will be suppressed.

Most people don't even know if their vote for counted so this needs checking in every state. That was just one method of disenfranchising voters. Apparently there were deliberately fewer voting stations in minority areas causing long lines and putting people off waiting hours to vote. Simple but very effective. Come on get this sorted

I keep saying too to watch the NC Supreme Court case that still HAS NOT BEEN DECIDED! The republican who lost is trying to have 60,000 votes in mainly blue counties, thrown out. It’s insulting and it’s an insidious march to disenfranchisement. Stay tuned.

I have never been more grateful for Elections Canada (Canadian here). They provide non-partisan oversight of elections, ensure there are plenty of polling stations, no lineups, quick id check of course, no demonstrating allowed. They also check that the results are accurate and not tampered with. In Canada like most western democracies, there are strong campaign finance finance laws as well that cap donations at a very low amount and are public so no financial hanky-panky.

Apparently campaign finance laws are nonexistent in America now. As long as you vote for the right party.

Thank you. I keep trying to bring this up. Everyone keeps blaming all those people who didn't vote, but fail to say anything about the provisional voters, many married women, overseas voters many military, and citizen contested voters whose ballots were rejected or provisional and not counted. In addition there were the Russian traced bomb threats at voting sites in Democratic Areas of Pennsylvania and Georgia which were added to Trump thanking Musk in PA for his Starlink? They are currently pushing a Federal Bill concerning Married Names matching the Birth Certificate to disenfranchise married women so I would advise women getting married Not to take their husbands name, do something now to restore your birth name, or you could be loosing your right to vote.

68% of eligible voters voted but not for Trump. He won by a tiny margin on 1.5%. How did he win? Jill Stein ran as a 3rd candidate on the Green Party ticket. Those closest to her implored her to not run for fear of what happened, would happen.

Votes that mostly would have gone to Harris, went to Stein

.

Trump does not have a mandate in the House or Senate. He only has two years (election in 2026) to change the Constitution so that he can run for a third term, change the 14th amendment, and make other changes that will favor him and end our democracy.

on January 3rd., Rep. Ogles (R-TN) has proposed a bill to amend the Constitution. It takes 2/3 of the House and Senate to amend the Constitution, then it takes 38 States to ratify it before it can become law.

The GOP Reps in the House have proposed a bill (SAFE Act) that will disenfranchise women in 2026 so they can't vote. Married women, who have taken their husband's surname and do not have a passport will not be able to vote. The bill will require the woman to nave her birth name as her legal name in order to vote or a passport.

Most Republican women don't have a passport, a study has shown, and they and GOP- leaning married women have mostly taken their husband's surname.

I wonder, for example, what Polly Jordan thinks of her husband, Rep. Jim Jordan, voting "aye" for that bill.

All of this and more are examples of the GOP's extremism in their lust for power and the exclusive right to make decisions for all Americans so they can dominate and bully without fear of reprisal. This is not new; it has been slowly building up for years. I have wondered what it would take and when the bubble would burst before people who think it is a waste of time to vote, women who allow their husband to decide for whom they both will cast ballots, or those who foolishly believe the lies told on political campaigns, when will they wake up and smell the coffee. It is not only a privilege or a right to vote, it is an obligation, if you want to have a say in how your government works!

If not, keep your mouths shut; you don’t deserve the freedoms and rights others have earned through their participation in our democracy.

I have come to the conclusion that nothing at all will change the cult's view of their jeebus; it's a visceral implantation of "what's right" that is caught up in biblical prophecy that many, many of them are preaching means jeebus is getting ready to return and there's only one thing to "put in place" for that to happen (which would be the installation of satan somehow) and they are clamoring for this to happen. And there are others who, aside from biblical shit, just believe this demented guy and his puppy, depending on how you view the heirarchy between plump and elmo, are the last best chance for America to be white again.

Absolutely find a thing you can do to add your voice to the opposition/resistance (which is it, BTW?); email congress representatives, talk to your neighbor, volunteer for human rights groups in your area, etc.

This is all serious as hell and really scary; but please find time for laughter.

It’s good to find just silly or funny things every day that make you laugh. If you find it difficult to not think about the serious of now, find some political satire stand-up (watch old George Carlin). Watch a comedy movie, or listen to funny podcasts.

Humor is good for our brains, and laughter is good for our souls; laughing together is an amazing rallying force and can go far to lower anxiety and recalibrate perception.

Watch some of the SNL 50th Anniversary Celebration from Sunday; not only was it just very funny (as SNL is and has always been), but so many of the actors, writers, comedians, musicians took sniper-like (all in good fun) shots at Trump and all that is happening. (Steve Martin’s monologue and Martin Short’s “interruption”, the weekend update, revivals of old skits, Black Jeopardy w/Eddie Murphy [and Tom Hanks back as Doug - which MAGA did NOT like], Debbie Downer, Will Farrell in Scared Straight Skit etc. It felt so good to see people laughing (and a lot of breaking character and cracking up) and to laugh and know that millions were watching and also laughing. Also good to see them all making fun of each other and enjoying every bit of it.

A good reminder, too, that so much of what is going on is absolutely terrifying, but also ridiculous and buffoonish and worthy of the ridicule of our great comedic talent.

(And if you’re an SNL fan from way back, Adam Sandler’s song, “50 Years” is magnificent.

Mr. Litman: Stunning and impressive summary of the details for both DOJ and the SDNY. So, so impressive to see the strength of the SDNY staff stand up to this BS. Frankly, I am in awe of their courage, ethics, and immediate willingness to do the "right thing." I should have expected their marvelous actions, but I was blinded by my naivete in thinking that the DOJ would not take such a grammar school approach to handling a challenging situation. Boy, was I wrong. Many thanks for your summary with great details...very helpful, indeed.

What is most striking to me is the ongoing false, baseless and unproven accusation, initiated by Trump, that the charges against him were due to “weaponization of the DOJ”— and the use of that accusation as a cudgel to derail the legal, appropriate and justifiable charges against himself and other elected officials who have broken laws, indicative of deep corruption.

AND, in retaliation or punishment for the so-called “weaponization” of the judiciary THIS ADMINISTRATION OPENLY, SHAMELESSLY AND SELF-RIGHTEOUSLY WEAPONIZES NOT JUST THE JUDICIARY TOWARDS ITS SO-CALLED “ENEMIES” BUT WEAPONIZES THROUGH OVER-REACHING EXECUTIVE POWERS ATTACKS A MERIT-BASED GOVERNMENT WORKFORCE, CRIPPLING IN BODY, THOUGHT AND SPEECH THE LAWFUL FUNCTIONALITY OF GOVERNMENT THROUGHOUT ALL ITS AGENCIES. If it was wrong for charges to be brought against lawless individuals, including Jan6 convicts, why is it right to use the powers of government to attack or destroy folks who do the government’s business?? ——Attacking especially progressive, humanitarian and constitutional actors and institutions??

We’ll see you in court.

I obviously don’t know how many state and federal prosecutors or former prosecutors subscribe to Harry’s column here. But every single one, as they’ve read Harry’s accounts of events in the Adams case, surely felt the bile rise in their throats and clenched their jaws in barely suppressed outrage. Career prosecutors aren’t in this business for money or fame; indeed, we’re just as likely to be the target of brickbats. We do this work because it is vital to a free society that someone stands in a courtroom to vindicate the social interests reflected in the criminal law. We do this work because we believe we can do it better than the vast majority of lawyers could do it. And we do it because we know that our decisions, as bone-headed as some of them can be, are made with our eye on the facts and the law. When you’ve appeared before the same judges for a few years and they recognize you in the halls of the courthouse, they know that your decisions, right or wrong, are based on the facts and the law.

Bove’s conduct throughout this affair is, as Harry has correctly called it, despicable and dishonorable. It is more than that: it is an insult to every man and woman who stands up in court and says “Good morning, Your Honor. I appear on behalf of the State [or People or the US]. Even more insidious is the corrosive effect this affair can have on the public’s view of the justice system, a result that helps no one but those who hope to gain when confidence in the justice system collapses.

Maybe only prosecutors can fully appreciate the gravity of the Adams affair as it strikes close to the bone. The attorneys at SDNY and Main Justice clearly saw the threat posed by Bove’s actions. To them the nation owes a debt of gratitude that can never be paid — their bravery and determination helped expose as fact the lawless and brutal nature of the top echelons of the DOJ. I pray that this is the only time in the next four years that such a display of courage is needed. But I also fear that many more of us will be put to the same test that the attorneys at SDNY and Main Justice have taken — and passed.

Why didn't Bovi sign it himself if he was that keen to do Trump's bidding?

Sadly the loss of 3 people in the DOJ won't bother traitors like Bovi, he now knows that team can be bullied into capitulation so he will do it again and vf there's a block stance he will choose someone. Basically this department is now in MAGAs hands and will do Trump's bidding :(
