The most striking and dangerous element of this situation is not just the abuse of executive power but the complete absence of institutional resistance to Trump’s overreach. In his first term, Trump’s attempts to extort Ukraine and manipulate the Department of Justice were thwarted by officials who, despite political pressure, chose to uphold their constitutional oaths. Figures like former Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and other senior DOJ officials famously threatened mass resignations, forcing Trump to retreat. Similarly, media giants like CNN’s parent company successfully pushed back against his efforts to interfere with mergers.
Now, however, Trump faces no meaningful opposition within the executive branch. The “adults in the room”—those willing to challenge unlawful directives—are gone. In their place are loyalists like FCC Chair Mike Carr, who appears eager to use federal regulatory powers as a political weapon. Carr’s revival of previously dismissed FCC investigations and threats against media companies signal not just compliance but active complicity in Trump’s vendettas. This alignment between Trump’s personal grievances and government authority marks a perilous shift toward unchecked executive power.
Democrats in Congress must recognize the gravity of this threat. Impeachment is not just a political tool but a constitutional safeguard designed precisely for moments like this—when a president’s conduct poses a direct danger to democratic institutions. By using federal agencies to retaliate against media and suppress dissent, Trump is undermining both the First Amendment and the independence of regulatory bodies like the FCC.
Failing to act would set a dangerous precedent, signaling that such abuses are tolerable in a functioning democracy. Even if conviction in the Senate remains unlikely, impeachment proceedings would serve as a vital assertion of Congress’s role in checking executive misconduct and preserving democratic norms. Without this accountability, the erosion of institutional safeguards will only accelerate, leaving future administrations free to exploit power without consequence.
Even though this would be a move without precedent (we are now living in an unprecedented time), it would be time for ALL the former presidents, speakers of the House, former Senators, Governors, VIPs, Scientists, former heads of states of friendly countries, etc., to issue a common statement condemning the fascist coup d'état. Every dignified form of silence and reserve that would have been good in the old times is completely beside the point, in my opinion. What are they waiting for? In the Nazi period the the Pope issued an encyclical (Mit brennender Sorge, German for "With burning anxiety"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mit_brennender_Sorge). The time to act is now! The USA are too precious to further go down the road to fascism.
If the DNC can wake up and take action, it should now issue a call to action for all of us who value our rights. If not the DNC, then a consortium of respected citizens, such as Obama, Liz Cheney, Kinziger of Illinois, and a bunch of others that people respect. Actually, the latter is preferable, although both would be beneficial. This is no time for equivocation. It is time to lay bare the road down which the Nazis are traveling.
And what kind if action do you suggest Raphael? They don't have tge majority in either branch. With all of trmp's lynched in place please tell us what they can do? They have filed lawsuits in cases they have been able. Please tell us what they can do with the DC judge a huge Allie of trmp's the AG in his pocket...please enlighten us. There are 3 special elections coming up in 60 days. Volunteer to help those campaigns!
They are up and MORE than aware. There isn't much they can do until the 3 special elections. 60 days then they will be able to at least stale mate his agenda
A very useful idea. Gathering these luminaries together to issue a warning — and a call to action — is exactly the right approach. Among Trump's sycophants, it will fall on deaf ears. But there must be some Republicans left who've not sold their consciences to the Proud Boys. Surely those with any self-respect would have to be moved to defend the remnants of democracy that exist in the US. Liz Cheney can't do it all.
Call it what it is: fascism on the way. The Nazis are in power now, with subservient lackeys ruling the roost. But they can be defeated IF we the people pull together and loudly shout our displeasure every day.
Yes, "do something" - should become a guiding mantra (especially for those of us prone to blaming, finger pointing, castigating, etc. The imperative may force us to look at this, for now, as "us/them" ...)
I guess trump is trainable, he learned the first time around that enough people hate him and love democracy that he had to stack the deck in his favor this time and he's done a very good job of that!
Not completely on topic, but — No one, NO ONE voted to give Musk (and the Heritage Foundation oligarchs) the keys to steal OUR Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, aid for children, money for infrastructure, etc. NO ONE!
No one , including Repubs, wants their money/information stolen. This is the time, according to Lawrence ODonnell, to impeach the treasury secretary Scott Bessent for allowing access to all Americans data.
That is dubious. Even the Commander-in-Thief boasted right in front of God and the entire country that Musk knew more about the voting machines in Pennsylvania than anyone. Talk about a blatant steal.
These are some dark thoughts, and yet I'll confess to sharing this point about people amusing themselves with the equivalent of the Roman emporers' Bread and Circuses while the Goths and Visigoths made camp just the other side of the Tiber. And we are so very easily distracted, aren't we? In my more paranoid moments I wonder if we've been hollowed out with some deliberation by whomever it is that most benefits from fleecing a herd of passive sheep. Argh. And this means us non-sheep have an even bigger job to do: first wake the sheep, then show them a picture of reality, and then keep on keeping on, because if we don't, 'they' have already won.
Depressingly accurate. Not enough people were willing to believe the scale of the Trump threat. Someone needs to create a schematic diagram of all the checks on exec power and which ones Trump has neutralized. It would be pretty frightening. Imagine a two-page newspaper ad — the schematic on one side and a list of US and international luminaries on the facing page describing the scale of the threat and endorsing action to address it. No entertainers. Major world leaders (retired, obviously) scientists, etc.
To me it's an opportunity to take the pulse of news outlets yielding to censorship though intimidation. There are other ways to circulate what you suggest. There's a way to frame the message for different audiences. More psychology should go into ads like you suggest and I don't see the party exploring this enough. Maga is constantly chipping away. Now nazi adds, soft and pretty much straight forward, run on fb, Twitter, and ad banners I see on too many internet news sites. Do we simply not press the limits? If we are having ads rejected regularly, that needs to be plastered here at least.
A fractured, self inflicted opposition serves (is a goal of) the fascist forces. The above analysis/opinion ignores that 183 million of U.S. adults didn't vote for a coup, or to give musk the keys to Treasury (and other gov systems). Undoubtedly, it's accurate to say ignorance (a decades long GOP project), and cynicism motivated many non-voters. But just as many likely had their voting efforts suppressed, or were stressed, confused and/or overwhelmed by the massive, oligarch financed propaganda machine. Blame, if at all helpful right now, might be most useful when well considered.
But, they will inevitably, arouse the slumbering bear which is only, just now beginning to emerge from the decades long slumber of induced somnabular ignorance ...
CmL have seen many comments of people VERY remorseful for not voting or voting trmp because they believed him, which ALWAYS astounds me considering trmp and the truth are as FAR apart as it gets.
Where are those that care more about the country than their political ambitions?? Why do the Republican that do care not have the backbone to stand up to one- ONE man? Why isn’t he arrested?
It isn't one man. Its the GOP having the majority in both branches. And the judges? In DC, the AG. Until we pick up more seats come April, please tell what youvthink can be done? For now, until the special elections in April .
😡Democrats in Congress must recognize the gravity of this threat.
The GOP would not vote to impeach. They have the majority. The coup is, in my mind, basically over. We have to use the courts now. Congress is useless.
Correct the GOP will not impeach. Jeez they are scared to approve these radical 'Secretary' positions which they know are so underqualified. And if by chance the Dems win back the midterms and start impeachment proceedings, these last two weeks are going to seem like a cafeteria fight compared the havoc DumDum and his minions will unleash. They will release the Kraken of any thread of a functioning government, the American people be damned. Liberally scorched earth will follow.
I can’t help but think that if a few of these corporations would forgo a bit of profit to protect the Constitution we could stop some of this. But I’m just a dreamer I guess.
This is what happens when media companies are owned by large corporations with other business interests. They don’t care about truth or journalistic ethics—only the bottom line. This lawsuit has no merit whatsoever! Trump won! How has he been damaged by anything CBS might have done!!!
SCOTUS has already granted the corporatocracy the keys to the kingdom, and their chief champion carte blanche to do whatever the hell he wants, so who needs a Constitution?
Until the Democrats can wake up and possibly regain majorities in Congress, it will be impossible. Speaker Johnson is fully willing to turn the other way when trump takes actions that would require Congressional votes and approvals. The Senate is very willing to confirm very biased and unqualified people into roles of power. Musk is given the green light to everything, even as lawsuits are filled. By the time those lawsuits are heard it will be way too late. And musk really has no legal authority to do anything, yet staff are being dismissed and replaced with lackeys who do whatever.
This is a well calculated, well researched plan by the Heritage Foundation, one that has taken years to create. And as planned trump's around behavior and outlandish public statements are what the media and Democrats comment about. While instead they should be very vocal (so much more so than I'm seeing) for the IG dismissals, the removal of nonpartisan, career members of the DOJ, the FBI and other agencies, the attacking the media (gee, this is the gameplan of every authoritarian government), the open access granted to musk and his lackeys to sensitive data and more.
I do appreciate what the folks at contrarian are doing, just we need our actual democratic members of Congress to do more. The clock is ticking to 2026.
You presume we will have free and fair elections in 2026. With all the voter suppression efforts underway, the electoral college is being stacked against us.
The midterm elections are the purview of the states. See Article I, Section 4 of the Constitution. The EC will not be involved. Not then. In 2028, assuming there are even elections in 2028.
It's Obviously Practical to impeach the bastard. Bummer we don't have Leadership with Fortitude from the Democrats 😡 Thanks Harry, and will reStack ASAP 💯
Sue spread the word on the 5 Calls App. It presents the law/Constitutional violations, gives talking points or scripts, and pulls up your Congressional Representatives and Senators.

Multiply Venezuela by Cuba, Canada, Mexico. In my building many residents have dual citizenship. Have boucoups business interests in the old country.
I'm hoping that there already are schisms of MAGAT House members.
1. Minority Republicans. How can they support discrimination against themselves? Actually. white women who may have been Republicans benefitted most from DEI.

Personally I think he rigged the election - his lackeys were all over the country in the weeks before the day.
Voter suppression all by itself made the difference. Without it, the GOP can't win.
They should have the Capitol police put him up on a 5150, imho.
Not completely on topic, but — No one, NO ONE voted to give Musk (and the Heritage Foundation oligarchs) the keys to steal OUR Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, aid for children, money for infrastructure, etc. NO ONE!
he can stop payment on Social Security or Medicare on a whim. The coup is complete.
Not quite ... (they've only begun to poke the slumbering bear, and the bear is only just beginning to become aroused ... )
No one , including Repubs, wants their money/information stolen. This is the time, according to Lawrence ODonnell, to impeach the treasury secretary Scott Bessent for allowing access to all Americans data.
I think 49% of the voters did☹️
That is dubious. Even the Commander-in-Thief boasted right in front of God and the entire country that Musk knew more about the voting machines in Pennsylvania than anyone. Talk about a blatant steal.

the answer to that question is yes, it has been deliberate. This coup was begun in the 1980s and culminated in Jan. 2025
Well stated ...!
💯

I like how you think. It would reach ppl that are so overwhelmed by what's occurring they get distracted or totally shut down.
I can't help wondering whether any major newspaper would be willing to accept and print the ad, given their current See-No-Evil stances.
To me it's an opportunity to take the pulse of news outlets yielding to censorship though intimidation. There are other ways to circulate what you suggest. Then START ACTING.
REMEMBER: FASCISTS only have POWER if you GIVE it to them. Find your SPINE, America and KICK OUT THE BILLIONAIRES sucking the life out of us!
Hell, even little South Korea just kicked out their wannabe dictator when he became drunk on power and greed!
America has ALREADY overthrown one king.
It's time for ACT II. SHOW UP IN NUMBERS TOO BIG TO IGNORE.
Yes! That! 100% ...
