The United States has died as world leader and China will claim its place on the world stage as the leader in technology, environment, education and world philanthropy. How crazy is this? The GOP killed the country, aided and abetted by SCOTUS.

jussmartenuf's avatar

The Chinese have passed us on a world wide basis. They are building their excellent EV's in South America now and no American cars will be able to compete.

They do not have Wall Street to suck all the profitability out of products to give to billionaire stock holders who have made our health care outrageously expensive, etc.

And, for themselves before too long!

I wanted to "Like" your post, but suffice to say you are correct. They killed our country, helped by the Extreme Court. I can't believe how stupid all these people are.

Bombay Troubadour's avatar

We didn’t get to this place in history with just the GOP.

This USA gangster bird of prey has two political wings.

The real fight ( which they will do ANYthing to distracts us from), is not left/right, it is up/down. And the ‘ups’ are winning bigly.

After the tribunals, it will be a long messy process to restore democracy.

Question ... is this Trumps doing? (Because I just don't believe he is that intelligent) or is it the sick f*cks behind him, propping him up like "A Weekend at Bernies" and using him as a stinking, dead, front man?

Rhonda L Schneider's avatar

Project 2025, Peter Theil, Steven Miller they are just some of the behind the scenes people feeding this sick President.

Cynthia Kruger (HI) 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️'s avatar

On the one hand does it really matter if it is 🍊💩 personally doing it, or someone else (e.g. Steven Miller, JD Vance) in the admin.? On the other, looking ahead, knowing who the architect is would help us down the road.

Lynette Mason's avatar

It really does matter who is directing this. Trump is despotic enough but not smart enough for all these moves. Know your enemy before you can fight back. You already realize this, I see.

The current billionaire/bankers/think-tankers/oil-barons/pharma-board-scum are mostly decendants of the founders of the nation-state of the US. They descend largely from European royalty. Their bloodlines trace back to kings, hence their high regard for "VIP" imaginary nonsense.

The world monarchy serves the papacy, and the Vatican is quite sore about the Protestant Reformation. The pope and friends want to punish us for that. They love their little centuries-long retaliation campaigns. (This is the reason Catholic Charities are bussing a bunch of catholic socialists into the US - it's an effort to take over - and it doesn't have anything to do with race. It's an ideology/fealty thing.)

Both parties fully serve the ruling bloodlines above them. To side with one or the other is to fall into the trap. The rulers love it.

Unfortunately for them, we are greater in number and we are far stronger as individuals. We only need about 8% of the population onboard for the tipping point to arrive. We are on the way and they are panicking ..which is the first smart thing they've done in a loooooonggg while.

It's P2025, which is a detailed blueprint for leading the country into a totally authoritarian state. All those executive orders? Already set up by P2025; all he has to do is sign them, no prelim thinking required. To top it off, trump, who has always admired the world's dictators and hoped to pull off what they've done, is the perfect tool. He is in Heaven, and adding his own "fine touches" to the effort, outlined in this article. (Not that he isn't also getting help here/there behind the scenes from miller, ought, and a few others.)

Susan M's avatar

It has always been Trump's dream to make the world reflect himself - he really is an extreme narcissist. But the leaders of Project 2025, who are now serving as his cabinet, are all in with this, because they DO want to police ideology. So, it's both.

Stephen Miller and the Project 2025 SATAN document written by all the MAGA Heritage Foundation Satan's staff and members.

Joyce Nowak's avatar

He has a Steven Miller and the author of Project 2025 on staff in the White House! Those two for starters! Trained as Nazis!

Aiming to trash our constitution and the rights and freedoms it promises!

I do not have faith or trust in the United States government anymore. Regardless of what happens, I will never adopt a Trumpian view of the world. I am incapable of that. It isn't just Trump, it's the unhinged people behind him and that support him that are to blame for this disastrous turn of events. America has never been "perfect," but it certainly has been a myriad of times better than than under the current administration (if that's what one can call it). This isn't even a government anymore.

Hasn't Trump flooded the zone to float Epstein down river? The assault on free speech was sure to attract gadflies, especially the attack on Colbert, the WSJ, and the media, threatening Kimmel and Fallon next. He wants to fight on more comfortable ground. Truth is that independent and established media are one of our last hopes. America's liberal democracy has been largely abandoned by Congress, SCOTUS, every department of government, the leadership of the Pentagon, and our law enforcement agencies. In some cases, these checks and balances built into our system over 236 years have been turned against us. SCOTUS isn't content in providing MAGA cover; those black robed radicals want to undo and undermine older, established judicial safeguards of our freedoms. The national press corps is our army. For munitions it uses the truth. For Trump, every gathering of that coffee klatch is like Jan. 6, not in the Capitol, but in the WH. He's got to beat them off, those extremists with pens and brains. But then there's the First Amendment. What to do? Sue!!! Litigate!! No facts? Find a law, no matter how old or irrelevant. No law? Fall back on the canard that ruling against the Administration is frustrating the people's will, the mandate.

Lilly Dog's avatar

Trump is the Trojan Horse for Vance, he just doesn’t know it yet. Suspecting his exit is being planned with the focus on Epstein. And that’s a whole other story what Epstein was really up to and for who.

Nancy's avatar

I said earlier this week, after the "cankles" revelation, that trump will retire for health reasons. they will give him a gold-plated sendoff, with the qatar plane, a gold plaque, a gold medal, maybe even a presidential medal from vance. It will be worshipful and over-the-top. And then Project 2025 will really try to dig in.

Lilly Dog's avatar

Likely true. I am just not sure if he will ever go willingly.

Patr's avatar

Try? It’s already got a chokehold. We need the GOP out of office, or at least out of the majority.

NanceeM's avatar

I don't see him ever retiring willingly, which he would see as losing. JD may have another plan, abetted by his tech overlords, but Trump is not on that page.

I finally bit the bullet and unsubscribed from the LA Times. I'm happy to support you on Sustack. I'm not sure if it was you or the headline writer who chose to quote from the Beatles' "A Day in the Life," but it is so apt for this administration.

Judith Swink (CA)'s avatar

LOL! On reading his headline, I immediately heard the Beatles in my head...

I did too, when Harry quit LAT. If only John Lennon were still alive. I’ve often wondered what he would have to say about the mess we’re in.

Trump is drunk on power. He is addicted to power and power makes him richer and richer everyday. And he loves money more than power. King Baby.

jussmartenuf's avatar

Hello.

I guess i am not the only one to have come to the conclusion several years ago that Trump and his henchpeople are trying to set up a Fascist government in the United States.

It is not the first time this has been attempted but hope it is the last. In order to make it the last the convicted felon in the White House needs to go, although a generation filling hierarchy has already been put it place, i.e. Vance (in line to succeed), Rubio (keeping our foreign policy one of brutality), Hegseth (in charge of our military) with the entire military industrial establishment to finance them, fascist FOX news to lie and distort for them and on and on.

Not like it is new, the day Kennedy was murdered in Dallas the Republican John Birch Society ran a full page "Wanted for Treason" ad against him in the Dallas Morning News.

Fundamentalist religious beliefs are often totally crack pot, and Trump has all those crack pots behind him ignoring his lies and adulterous history.

So woke up people, Fascism is knocking on the door and many of the FOX legions do not even know the meaning of it, they are out of a state of awareness and loving it.

Patr's avatar

The government is being run by human garbage.

MM Harris's avatar

Very serious stuff. And if people still think, "oh, we'll just win the 2026 midterms and be in a position to reverse it all" they are sadly mistaken. One, there may BE no election; Two, if it does take place, it will be rigged. And if they then think, "oh, he can't run for a 3rd term" they are not paying attention. The bottom line, however, is these authoritarian moves are really designed to establish a foundation to support Christian Nationalism, where the control over EVERYTHING in our lives will be beyond belief to a nation whose citizens are accustomed to NONE of that. The current regime MUST be pushed back on and stopped NOW.

Sally Buehne's avatar

You're absolutely right! How many of us thought the Supreme Court would grant immunity to the president? Or, earlier, rule there was no longer any need for the Voting Rights Act?

We seem to be living in a 'managed democracy' already.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guided_democracy

It's as Stalin said: it doesn't matter who votes, but who counts the votes. In the US it's a little bit different, in that Rs choose their voters via gerrymandering, thus marginalizing the votes of the opposition.

I realize in journalistic circled that ii might be considered malpractice, but if I owned the WSJ or the Post, I'd say, "fine. We'll stop covering you - or rather what you say. We'll report on what you're doing. We'll do investigative work on corruption and scandal, as we always have, and if it involves you, you will be given the opportunity to respond. But your every utterance will no longer be published here." If all the major outlets, in papers and television joined in protest against Trump's abuses of power to quash their 1st amendment rights, he would simply whither away, so hungry is he for attention.

John Lucken's avatar

I agree & wish the entire press corps would just walk out on camera in protest of the constant BS. Unfortunately that’s what the regime wants. No questions, just print the press release propaganda.

Lefty Red's avatar

Thank you, Harry, for pulling together what on the surface appear as separate stories. Our major media & Dem leaders seem largely oblivious to the bigger picture. You capture it very well as the attempt to make T "the fixed star the country revolves around."

Take the speech control in your column, add a DOJ untethered from statute or Constitution, incompetent cabinet secretaries (their departments actually run by ideologues), a supine political party, a willfully blind Supreme Court, government-approved public kidnappings, etc etc and we're well on the way to an authoritarian dictatorship. Too bad not enough people with megaphones have noticed.

One day We the People will wake up to the new dawn that We the People created after being shoved kicking & screaming into the corner & said NO! NOT ON OUR WATCH!

Meanwhile, we fight back for what is dear to us for as long as it will take.

Because, if each one did just 1 thing consistently democratic life in our country won't die.

Nancy's avatar

Thank you for this. I missed the NFL thing amidst all the epstein stuff. That HAS to continue, but we also can't let it obscure these sorts of statements. PS What do you know about Project Esther?
