I have no expectation that Congress will respond to this. We are well past a Constitutional crisis and into full blown fascism. I don’t care that they’re scared. We’re all scared but at least, unlike elected representatives, we are out there fighting for our democracy.

What we see—from lethal force to enforced impunity—is an abuse of authority and a hallmark of authoritarian governance. We will not be able to abolish ICE. We can disarm them without much trouble. We must move to disarm ICE. There is no logical reason for them to be armed. They are not ever shot at and if they were they should stop what they are doing and call the FBI, DEA, ATF or state and local police to take care of it.

If we were "into full-blown fascism," would you have posted what you did in a public forum? Has an state agent shown up at your door yet? Hyperbole isn't helpful. What's happening is bad enough.

Maria M Thompson's avatar

I think the examples of "investigations" against Adam Schiff and Jerome Powell, and the indictments of Letitia James and James Comey are good evidence that there is knocking on doors. I don't need to have them pound on mine to get the message.

Marina Oshana's avatar

I disagree. The fact that a state agent hasn’t shown up doesn’t mean they won’t or don’t feel empowered to do so. The threat is enough. Moreover, it was precisely under fascism that resisters spoke out publicly. The Brownshirts and the Gestapo did not have to round up every member of the resistance.

Bondi has sent a demanding letter to Minnesota election officials that if they want ICE to leave Minnesota, the state must hand over their election rolls. Senator Murphy is calling this an attempt to steal the election. Discuss amongst yourselves.

Nancy Bainter's avatar

What a crock of illegal action Bondi is asking. Pound sand, you little twit of "blondesse."

Maria M Thompson's avatar

Adding extortion as the end game completes the requirements for a charge of conspiracy to commit murder, a poor choice of action by an attorney.

Let’s call Bondi’s offer what it is: extortion.

In a word, WOW. (I first mistyped WOE. That too.)

Alex Pretti died a hero! Aiding and defending a woman who'd been pushed to the ground by fascist masked thugs cosplaying as law enforcement agents. Fuck this shit!

My feeling is that this regime's rush to fascism is so blatant and horrifying that our pushback will continue to grow and strengthen. A slower, less obvious approach may not have been as noticeable. Their arrogance works in our favor. They forget who they are dealing with. We are Americans.

Jenn Z's avatar

I agree, Wendy. I do not think people will stand for this.

If this isn't a turning point for Republicans, there is no hope until the midterms, assuming they take place. Trump is who he is, but Republicans are complicit in the damage he has done to our country at home and in the eyes of the world at large. I despair when I see the percentage of Americans who still support him.

Ed Weber's avatar

Good point. Any Republican for whom this is not a turning point is openly declaring themselves to be a Nazi.

Jean Marr Wilkins's avatar

Thank you so much, Harry.

The administration is not attacking solely Minnesota, but all of us. It is claiming the right to have its henchmen kill, to lie that the killing was justified, and then to let the perpetrators escape all accountability. We are all potential targets.

This cannot stand.

Here in Massachusetts we're paying close attention to what ICE is up to in neighboring Maine. Here's Joyce Vance's interview with Maine secretary of state Shenna Bellows: https://joycevance.substack.com/p/live-update-with-maine-secretary.

This is going to hurt them politically. The DHS money is not going to come. And moreover, using the argument that “he had a gun” was a justification for what happened is about the dumbest thing they could say.

I suspect the agents murdered him thinking the gun would provide cover. The gun was taken first, and then the shots came after.

There are going to be a few, just a few, 2nd amendment Trump supporters who are not going to like this.

It won’t be decisive, but we chip away slowly, then the regime falls apart all at once.

Nancy Bainter's avatar

The gun was taken quickly from Pretti around the time he was helping a person who had been brutally pushed by an ICE goon. Pretti was executed by an untrained goon who should be in custody now for arraignment for murder, not manslaughter, but murder.

Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

It seems that more than one untrained goon shot at Alex Pretti. Which shot(s) killed him? We may not know that for sure, but IMO every man who fired is guilty of murder.

Bob Tinsman's avatar

The president's duty is to "take care that the Laws be faithfully executed", yet ICE and CBP are actively breaking the law and aren't being held accountable by anyone in the executive branch.

I agree that Congress should use its power to block ICE funding, but that will only solve part of the problem. The real solution is impeachment and conviction, but Republicans have apparently accepted their role as apparatchiks in an authoritarian government.

Mary Schweitzer's avatar

This was not only a violation of the Fourth Amendment - but also the Tenth, which mattered a great deal at the time:

“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.”

Bob Tinsman's avatar

True, the federal government is blocking the state and local governments from enforcing their own laws.

Dear friends, I'm afraid full blown authoritarianism has arrived. No "strongly worded letter" can change that.

But you all still can for drump's regime is not carved in stone.... yet.

Drump needs to explain to the US people why he's executing US citizens like Ms. Good and Mr. Pretti without any crime, without any trail.

Noem, Vance, Miller and their underlings need to shut up because they only produce lie after lie after lie.

Congressional Republican Nazis Are Complicit In 2 Minnesota ICE Murders

Cheeto Unleases His Gestapo Goons On Blue States: The Nazi Republican Problem

About 130,000 people without legal immigration status reside in Minnesota, as opposed to 2.1 million in Texas and 1.6 million in Florida These numbers tell you everything WE the People need to know about this partisan attack on Democratic states

And now the Nazi Republicans are looking for donations to their new superpac named affectionately the Reagan Caucus But in reality there are no legislators to make a caucus It’s just propaganda spin to dupe stupid MAGA a-hotes to part with some more money

For people who wish for law and order to be restored and hope everything will change once Cheeto is out of office are not being realistic because the Nazi Republican threat will still exist and be reinforced For the next 10y or more no Nazi Republican should ever be elected to public office….EVER All Nazi Republicans in Congress are complicit with Cheeto’s regime in what is happening in blue states Vote these traitors out of office

Robin’sNest's avatar

Congress should act in several ways and require that ICE and CBP be pulled out of all cities. Bondi and Noem resign immediately. All involved in the two shootings should be turned over to State law enforcement. National Guard should be pulled out of Washington.

Thank you for this sober and forceful summary.

“Maximum damage and massacre law enforcement” sounds like January 6

Could the official lying about the circumstances of these murders be prosecuted as criminal conspiracy to cover up a crime, or to taint evidence? Is there a statute of limitations for such crimes?
